Congratulations on your intelligent decision to use a smart thermostat in your home. But are you getting the most out of this device, and using it to save energy and optimize your comfort? Take a few minutes to learn the functionality of your thermostat. Don’t worry about getting stumped: These devices are designed to be user-friendly and intuitive to program!
The beauty of smart thermostats is that they give you complete control over your comfort. Many thermostats can also “learn” your behaviors and the comfort settings you prefer, as well as learn when you’re home or away. But how you set them up initially can determine how well they work for you. Follow these tips below, and then jump to the manufacturer’s setup guides for your particular model.
To maintain comfort and save energy in the heating season, set your temperature to 68 degrees F when you’re home during the day. Or, try to lower your temperature by 1 degree from where you keep it now; you likely won’t notice the difference.
- Program your temperature to be lower at night and when you’re away (e.g., at work, on vacation, etc.).
- Set your daily schedule to begin heating or cooling your home shortly before you arrive home from work.
- Avoid cranking up the heat or AC. It won’t heat or cool your home any faster, and it will waste energy and money.
